Xi Jinping Leads Military Parade with Putin and Kim, Defying Western Absence

Chinese President Xi Jinping issued a stark warning during his country’s largest-ever military parade at Tiananmen Square, flanked by Russia’s Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un. The high-profile event, marking 80 years since Japan’s defeat in World War II, was notably absent of Western leaders, with Putin and Kim, both controversial figures in the West, being the honored guests.

The parade aimed to showcase China’s military strength and diplomatic influence amidst strained relations with allies and rivals due to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs and unpredictable policies. Xi addressed the crowd of over 50,000 spectators, emphasizing the choice between peace or war, dialogue or confrontation, and cooperation or rivalry, asserting that the Chinese people are on the right side of history.

Riding in an open-top limousine, Xi inspected troops and advanced military equipment, including new displays such as laser weapons, nuclear ballistic missiles, and large underwater drones. The parade featured helicopters and warplanes flying in formation, symbolizing China’s military prowess.

The event included traditional People’s Liberation Army units alongside new additions like the cyberspace unit responsible for cybersecurity defense. Xi, clad in a suit reminiscent of Mao Zedong, greeted world leaders in English, with Indonesia’s president making a surprise appearance.

Trump, in a post on Truth Social, acknowledged the U.S. role in China’s liberation from Japan while sending regards to Putin and Kim. He downplayed the parade’s implications for the U.S. and reaffirmed his positive relationship with Xi.

Xi portrayed World War II as pivotal in China’s resurgence, transitioning from victim to economic powerhouse. At a regional summit, he advocated for global unity against hegemony and power politics, indirectly criticizing the U.S. and its trade policies.

Putin utilized the occasion to strengthen energy agreements with China, while Kim sought implicit backing for his nuclear program. Notably, Kim’s daughter, considered a potential successor, made her international debut at the event.

Analysts are monitoring potential defense collaborations among China, Russia, and North Korea following recent alliances, potentially reshaping military dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region. The parade required extensive security measures, including road closures and volunteer mobilizations nationwide, to ensure a flawless event.

Xi’s objective was to demonstrate unwavering military support behind his leadership.
