“Canadian Women’s Rugby Team Prepares for World Cup 2025”

Known for their politeness and kindness, a skilled group of Canadian women are set to compete fiercely in the United Kingdom. Canada’s women’s senior rugby team is gearing up for the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025.

In their opening match at York Community Stadium, the second-ranked Canadian team will face off against Fiji, ranked 14th globally, in Pool B play. Following this, they will take on Scotland and Wales in subsequent matches.

While Canada’s rugby sevens team made headlines with a silver medal at the Paris Olympics last year, the women’s senior team has been steadily developing and enhancing its talent pool.

Although rugby is gaining popularity, it does not hold the same prominence as major women’s sports in Canada such as soccer, basketball, or hockey. However, a sendoff match against the United States at TD Place in Ottawa drew a record crowd, marking a significant milestone for the home team.

Speaking with Canadian national team member Olivia Apps, she expressed optimism about the current momentum in women’s sports in Canada, particularly in rugby. Apps emphasized the potential for a significant growth spurt in women’s rugby and sports in general, fueled by upcoming events like the LA Olympics.

The rugby community, including female athletes, actively advocates for their sport, launching fundraising campaigns to support initiatives like the World Cup. Despite the global recognition of rugby, women’s rugby remains non-professional in Canada. These women play a crucial role in promoting the sport and fostering participation and pride.

Among the current stars of women’s rugby is Ilona Maher, a prominent figure in the sport who has garnered a massive following worldwide.

Maher’s popularity surged after winning a bronze medal at the Olympics and finishing second in Dancing With The Stars. Her advocacy for body positivity and strength has resonated with numerous fans, highlighting physical strength as a symbol of power and embracing an unapologetic attitude.

The atmosphere was electric at TD Place as Maher interacted with fans post-match, symbolizing the impact of her presence. Her influence has attracted new audiences to women’s rugby, showcasing the emergence of inspiring role models both on and off the field.
