Allegations of a Toronto detective caught with drugs after a drunken vehicle chase that injured two police officers could impact numerous criminal prosecutions, as per records obtained by CBC News.
Detective Constable Brian Sukhram, who investigated narcotics for the Toronto Police Service’s drug squad and other units, was arrested in Peel Region last year for possession of cocaine and methamphetamine with intent to traffic, after years of undercover operations involving drug buys and contraband handling.
Legal experts consulted by CBC News suggest that Sukhram’s tainted history and charges will significantly affect cases where he was involved.
Defense attorney Alison Craig stated, “His credibility and reliability in drug-related matters have been severely compromised. If he is a key witness, the prosecution may have to reconsider their case.”
Sukhram, declining to comment through a Toronto Police Association representative, faces potential repercussions on cases linked to him, as per documents released in response to an access to information request.

Following Sukhram’s arrest in July 2024, federal prosecutors spent weeks evaluating cases linked to him, analyzing spreadsheets of files, with details redacted before disclosure.
The OPP filed new charges against Sukhram in June 2025, including theft of drugs and obstruction of justice related to alleged evidence tampering during an on-duty incident in July 2024.
Involvement in Drug Cases
Sukhram, among several Toronto officers accused of drug theft, had a significant role in over 100 drug investigations, often working undercover.
Reid Rusonik, a defense lawyer advocating for drug legalization, highlighted concerns over potential misconduct in search warrant applications by Sukhram.
The charges against Sukhram could pave the way for criminal appeals, as noted by Rusonik.
The PPSC declined to provide an updated count of cases impacted by the Sukhram scandal.
