“Canada Shuts Out Israel in Davis Cup Opener”

In a unique scenario in Halifax, Canada began its Davis Cup tennis match against Israel in an empty Scotiabank Centre. The venue, which typically accommodates over 10,500 spectators, was devoid of fans due to safety concerns raised by local authorities and security agencies. Only athletes, team staff, officials, and a live stream by CBC without commentary were present.

Tennis Canada’s decision to hold the games without spectators or media led to a peaceful protest organized by Palestine Solidarity Halifax. Around 400 protesters gathered near Citadel Hill National Historic site to voice opposition to Israel’s participation in the event. The demonstrators marched through downtown Halifax, displaying placards and Palestinian flags while chanting slogans against anti-Palestinian racism.

Amid the quiet arena, Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo secured a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory over Israel’s Daniel Cukierman, giving Canada a 1-0 lead in the tie. Liam Draxl of Newmarket, Ont., extended Canada’s lead to 2-0 by defeating Orel Kimhi 7-6 (5), 6-4 in his first Davis Cup singles match.

The competition will continue with three matches on Saturday, including a doubles match between Draxl/Harper and Hasson/Shimanov, followed by Diallo facing Kimhi and Draxl against Cuikerman. The winning team will advance to the 2026 Davis Cup Qualifiers.
