“Hamilton Tiger-Cats to Honor Late GM Ted Goveia in Special Tribute Game”

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats are mourning the loss of their General Manager, Ted Goveia, who passed away. The team expressed deep sadness over Goveia’s death and announced plans to pay tribute to his contributions to Canadian football during the upcoming “Team Ted” game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Described as a highly respected leader, colleague, and friend, Goveia’s passion and dedication to Canadian football have left a lasting impact on those who knew him. Hailing from Burlington, Ontario, Goveia, who was in his first season as the GM of the Tiger-Cats, revealed in June that he had been diagnosed with a severe form of cancer, reported to be esophageal cancer by league sources.

Despite his health battle, Goveia remained committed to his role as GM, ensuring that the team continued to focus on building a strong roster for the 2025 season. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between his health treatments and his responsibilities as the general manager.

Having been appointed as Hamilton’s GM in December 2024 after an 11-year tenure with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Goveia’s return to his hometown was a significant milestone in his career. His early days with the Tiger-Cats were marked by long hours spent assembling a team and improving the roster following a season without a playoff appearance in the CFL.

Goveia’s dedication and love for his job were evident in his daily routine, where he found joy in being close to home and working in southern Ontario, appreciating the opportunity to fulfill his dream role. Despite the team’s recent struggles, Goveia’s leadership had propelled the Tiger-Cats to first place in the East Division with a record of 7-5.

In honor of Goveia, the Tiger-Cats will host a special tribute at the game against Winnipeg, known as the “Team Ted” game. Fans are encouraged to participate by wearing “Team Ted” t-shirts, with proceeds supporting initiatives launched in Goveia’s name. Additionally, the team has established the Ted Goveia Scholarships in partnership with McMaster University and Mount Allison University to support Canadian university football players.

Throughout his CFL career, Goveia was recognized as a leader who valued people as much as success. His journey from the Toronto Argonauts to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers showcased his commitment to excellence and his ability to connect with others. Goveia’s impact on Canadian football, both on and off the field, will be remembered and celebrated by fans, colleagues, and players alike.
