American tennis player Taylor Townsend has issued a heartfelt apology for her recent derogatory remarks about Chinese cuisine. Posting on Instagram, the 29-year-old, currently ranked world No. 1 in doubles, expressed deep regret, acknowledging her mistake and vowing to improve.
During her stay in China for the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Finals, Townsend shared videos of local delicacies such as bullfrogs and turtles, humorously suggesting she might need to raise concerns about the food quality with human resources.
Following a wave of online criticism, Townsend posted a second apology on Instagram, emphasizing her appreciation for the opportunity as a professional athlete to explore diverse cultures worldwide. She recognized the kindness and hospitality she had received in China, acknowledging that her previous comments did not reflect her positive experiences.
In a separate incident at the U.S. Open, Townsend clashed with Jelena Ostapenko, who allegedly questioned Townsend’s education and class after a match they played. Ostapenko later clarified that her use of the term “education” was in reference to tennis etiquette, not a personal attack.
Responding to a query about potential racial implications of Ostapenko’s remarks, Townsend, who is of Black descent, commended Ostapenko for her subsequent social media apology, emphasizing the importance of accountability and reconciliation.
Townsend is set to compete alongside McCartney Kessler in a doubles match against Kazakhstan in Shenzen, China, on September 18, with the victor advancing to the semifinals of the tournament.
