A tragic incident unfolded in Richmond Hill, Ont., where a vehicle crashed into a daycare, resulting in the death of one child and injuries to six others, according to local authorities. The fatality was a one and a half-year-old boy, who was pronounced dead at the hospital. Among the injured, one child is in serious condition while the rest, along with three staff members, are in stable condition. The affected children range in age from one and a half to three years old.
A man in his 70s was taken into custody at the scene, as confirmed by York Regional Police. Subsequently, charges of dangerous operation causing death and bodily harm were laid against him in connection with the tragic incident. Const. Kevin Nebrija stated that initial investigations suggest the crash was not intentional.
The distressing event occurred at First Roots Early Education Academy near Yonge Street and Nottingham Drive, with the vehicle, an SUV, crashing through a front window of the daycare. At the time of the collision, there were 96 children present in various rooms within the facility. All children have been located, and parents have been informed.
Describing the scene as chaotic, Nebrija mentioned that the SUV was initially in a parking lot before the crash. The Police Chief, Jim MacSween, expressed solidarity with the victims and responding officers, emphasizing the tragic nature of the incident. The daycare center also conveyed its condolences to the affected families.
Richmond Hill Mayor David West described the incident as “unimaginable” and “terribly shocking,” extending sympathies to the bereaved family and the injured children’s families. The community stands united during this challenging time, emphasizing the need for support and solidarity.
Parent Ramin Esmaeili expressed disbelief over the incident, noting that his wife was scheduled to visit the daycare for their children’s enrollment. Ontario Education Minister Paul Calandra also expressed deep concern and support for those affected by the tragedy.
Authorities advised the public to avoid the area and anticipate delays as investigations were ongoing. Mental health support services were encouraged for the families and individuals impacted by the crash.
