Israeli forces have pushed further into Gaza City while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traveled to New York to address the United Nations General Assembly. U.S. President Donald Trump is working on a deal to halt the conflict in Gaza as Israeli airstrikes claimed the lives of at least 19 individuals in the Palestinian territory. Among them were 11 individuals from two families in Zawayda town in the central Gaza Strip, where a residential building was struck by planes.
Israel’s military reported hitting 170 targets in Gaza within 24 hours, aiming at “terror infrastructure” utilized by militant groups. Tanks have entered Gaza City as part of an offensive to eradicate Hamas after their attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The ongoing offensive has resulted in widespread destruction, a humanitarian crisis, and severe food shortages.
While Netanyahu claims Gaza City as Hamas’ last stronghold, many civilians are trapped in the conflict zone, with no safe havens left. U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff expressed optimism in securing progress in the Gaza situation after Trump shared a comprehensive Middle East peace plan with leaders of Muslim-majority nations in New York.
Trump reassured Arab leaders that Israel would not annex the West Bank and promised to prevent such actions. Netanyahu has opposed the idea of a Palestinian state, despite several countries, including Britain, France, and Canada, officially recognizing Palestinian statehood.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas addressed the General Assembly via video after being denied a visa by the Trump administration. Abbas thanked countries that acknowledged Palestinian statehood and called for a permanent resolution to the Gaza conflict. Netanyahu is expected to speak at the General Assembly and meet with Trump in the upcoming week.
Israel faces increasing international criticism over its actions in Gaza, with the International Criminal Court issuing a warrant for Netanyahu on alleged war crimes. The U.S. remains a staunch supporter of Israel, with Trump warning against recognizing a Palestinian state, citing potential repercussions.
