Canada Climbs to No. 26 in FIFA Rankings

The Canadian men’s national soccer team has made significant progress in the latest FIFA world rankings, moving up two spots to reach No. 26. This achievement comes after American Jesse Marsch assumed coaching duties in May 2024 when Canada was ranked 49th.

Under Marsch’s guidance, the Canadian team has steadily improved, surpassing their previous highest ranking of No. 33 achieved in February 2022 under former coach John Herdman. Notably, they reached No. 31 in November and maintained that position to close out 2024. Subsequently, they achieved new milestones by reaching No. 30 in April and No. 28 in July.

The Canadian men’s team, which had previously been ranked as low as No. 122 in October 2014, now sits between Australia and Turkey in the rankings. This positioning follows victories against Romania (No. 51, down three) and Wales (No. 30, up one) during the September FIFA window, with Derek Cornelius scoring a crucial free kick against Wales.

Looking ahead, Canada is gearing up to face Australia (No. 25, down one) and Colombia (No. 13, up one) in the upcoming matches.

In the broader context of the FIFA rankings, Spain has reclaimed the top spot for the first time since June 2014, displacing Argentina, who had held the position since April 2023. France has moved up to No. 2, while Germany has dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since October 2024, now ranking at No. 12.

Spain’s rise to the top position was fueled by a resounding 6-0 victory over Turkey. Meanwhile, Morocco is on the cusp of breaking into the top 10 after climbing to No. 11 following an impressive run of eight wins out of nine matches.

In the CONCACAF region, Mexico maintains its lead at No. 14, followed by the United States at No. 16 and Canada at No. 3. Several other countries experienced notable movements in the rankings, with countries like The Gambia, Madagascar, Paraguay, Uganda, Libya, Suriname, and the Faroe Islands making significant gains. Conversely, Zimbabwe dropped nine places to No. 125.
