A high school basketball player from Prince Edward Island is set to elevate her game and potentially her athletic career as she prepares to attend university next year. Alex Newson has recently committed to enroll at the State University of New York at Albany, where she will be a part of the Albany Great Danes basketball team.
By joining the team, Newson is poised to make history as the first basketball player from Prince Edward Island to compete in NCAA Division I basketball. Reflecting on this achievement, Newson expressed her excitement, particularly as a representative of a small province, hoping to inspire other basketball enthusiasts, especially young girls who share her passion for the sport.
Newson’s basketball journey began at the age of five, and she has since made significant moves to advance her career. She relocated to Ontario before her grade 11 year to attend King’s Christian Collegiate, where she had the opportunity to play in a top-tier league throughout the year, competing against talented Division I and national team players while showcasing her skills for recruitment.
Through dedication and hard work, Newson recognized her potential to reach higher levels in her basketball career. Her dream of competing at the NCAA Division I level became a driving force, pushing her to continually improve and aim for success on the court.
Earlier this year, Newson proudly represented Team Prince Edward Island as the province’s flag bearer at the Canada Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Sharing this experience with her father, who coached the team and is a former Canada Games athlete, added a significant personal touch to her athletic journey.
Expressing gratitude for her parents’ unwavering support, Newson acknowledged their instrumental role in her accomplishments and decision-making process. With her mother accompanying her on the visit to Albany, Newson felt confident in her choice to commit to the university, recognizing the positive impact of their guidance and encouragement.
Looking ahead, Newson is eager to commence her studies in biology at the University at Albany while preparing for the upcoming basketball season. The opportunity to play NCAA basketball represents a rare and significant achievement for Newson, underscoring the remarkable journey she has undertaken to reach this milestone.
As she anticipates joining the team as a freshman, Newson is focused on making a strong impression, contributing to her team’s success, and honing her skills on the court. While her aspirations for a professional basketball career remain open-ended, Newson is determined to make the most of her collegiate experience and strive for excellence both academically and athletically.
With her commitment to the University at Albany, Newson is poised to embark on a new chapter in her basketball career, with training scheduled to begin next summer following the completion of her grade 12 school year.
