Ford’s Hybrid and Truck Sales Surge in 2025

Ford announced an increase in U.S. auto sales for the year 2025, driven by strong demand for its hybrid models and affordable pickup trucks. The company’s annual sales grew by six percent to 2,204,124 vehicles, compared to 2,078,832 in the previous year. Ford also reported a 2.7 percent increase in fourth-quarter sales.

This performance marked Ford’s best annual sales and fourth-quarter results since 2019. The news follows similar reports from automakers like Toyota, Hyundai, and General Motors, who also experienced higher annual sales despite industry challenges, including tariffs and the elimination of a $7,500 U.S. electric vehicle tax credit.

Ford highlighted that customers turned to base models of vehicles to cope with the industry’s high prices. The company’s hybrid vehicle sales surged by nearly 22 percent to 228,072 units, while sales of the compact Maverick truck increased by about 18 percent to 155,051 units.

Andrew Frick, head of Ford’s gas and electric vehicle operations, attributed the success to the strong demand for the Maverick truck, stating that it significantly contributed to addressing market affordability. Additionally, Ford’s well-established models, such as the F-series truck with 828,832 sales (an 8.3 percent increase), and the Ford Pro Transit van, which set a new annual sales record, also performed well.

In December, Ford announced a $19.5 billion writedown and the discontinuation of several electric vehicle models, including the fully electric F-150 Lightning and the T3 electric truck, in response to shifts in government policies and declining EV demand.

Looking ahead, Ford plans to introduce a model that utilizes a gas engine to recharge the battery, replacing the F-150 Lightning, and will halt the development of the next-generation electric truck and electric commercial vans.
