Sandwich Protest Sparks Federal Trial

Sean Charles Dunn, a resident of Washington, D.C., expressed his protest by throwing a sandwich at a federal agent, sparking a trial to determine if this action constitutes a federal offense. The trial commenced with assistant U.S. attorney John Parron emphasizing that regardless of one’s grievances, physical aggression towards others is unacceptable. Dunn acknowledged throwing the sandwich at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent on the night of August 10, asserting it as a symbolic act against President Donald Trump’s law enforcement policies. Defense attorney Julia Gatto argued that the sandwich toss was a harmless expression of Dunn’s dissent and maintained his innocence.

A bystander’s video of the incident went viral, portraying Dunn as a symbol of resistance against the federal presence in the capital. Despite a grand jury declining to indict Dunn on a felony assault charge, he now faces a misdemeanor charge. Testimony from Customs and Border Patrol agent Gregory Lairmore revealed that the sandwich hit him forcefully, leaving him feeling the impact through his ballistic vest, with the distinct smell of onions and mustard lingering in the air.

Amidst the trial, it was disclosed that Dunn had worked as an international affairs specialist with the Justice Department before his termination following the incident. The defense team raised concerns about the federal raid on Dunn’s home following his arrest, suggesting a targeted retaliation for his political beliefs. As the trial progresses, the court will determine the outcome of Dunn’s charges related to his altercation with the federal officer.
