“71-Year-Old Patient Endures 24 Hours in Hospital Hallway”

Guy Pollock, a 71-year-old resident of Watrous, Saskatchewan, endured a distressing experience at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, where he spent over 24 hours lying in a hospital hallway while receiving treatment for pneumonia. Pollock, who suffers from severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is immunocompromised, felt overwhelmed as more than 2,000 people passed by him during his stay.

Having initially sought medical attention on October 15 due to breathing difficulties, Pollock was diagnosed with pneumonia at a local hospital in Watrous before being transferred to Royal University Hospital. Despite being admitted to an observation room upon arrival, he was later relocated to a hallway near the emergency room where he spent a prolonged period before eventually being moved to Saskatoon City Hospital.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Pollock expressed understanding towards the healthcare staff, acknowledging their efforts in caring for him as best they could. The incident caught the attention of NDP associate health critic Keith Jorgenson, who visited Pollock to shed light on the ongoing issue of hospital overcrowding in Saskatoon. The NDP also raised Pollock’s case in the provincial legislature during a question period, prompting Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill to address the situation.

Cockrill, while expressing empathy for Pollock’s ordeal, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving healthcare services in the province. He highlighted recent investments in Saskatoon hospitals to enhance patient flow and expedite room placements. Notably, the Saskatchewan Health Authority announced the addition of 109 new acute care beds at Saskatoon City Hospital, with 40 beds already operational to alleviate the strain on hospital capacity.

The incident involving Pollock underscores the challenges faced by patients and healthcare providers in managing overcrowding in hospitals and the ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare services across Saskatchewan.
