“Regina Powerlifters Dominate International Competition”

Regina is home to a group of incredibly strong women, as demonstrated by the recent success of three local female powerlifters at an international competition. Sherry McEachern, aged 58, secured second place in her category (Masters 2, 84+ kg) at the World Masters Powerlifting Championships in South Africa. Reflecting on her achievement, she described the overwhelming emotions that accompany a successful lift.

Sandi Klempner, 42 years old, also excelled by clinching third place in her class (Masters 1, 84 kg) and impressively deadlifting over 390 pounds at her debut on the international stage. Recalling her experience, Klempner expressed her surprise at surpassing her own expectations and the intense thrill of competing with heavy weights.

Emmannuelle Archambault, aged 49, who has an extensive history of competing in powerlifting events, continued her success by claiming third place in her category (Masters 1, 76 kg) and breaking her previous national record with a bench press of 214.9 pounds. Archambault emphasized the satisfaction of validating her hard work and dedication within the nine-minute window of a lift on the competition platform.

The trio was part of a larger group of 14 Canadian women who participated in the championship. Klempner highlighted the supportive environment for middle-aged women in Saskatchewan that encourages involvement in powerlifting, noting the inclusive spaces provided by many local gyms.

Archambault shared her journey of transitioning from bodybuilding to powerlifting, citing the more flexible competition requirements and personal challenge as key factors that drew her to the sport. She also emphasized the physical benefits of strength training as she ages, particularly in maintaining strong and dense bones to prevent injuries.

McEachern, who only started powerlifting at the age of 56, was inspired by the desire to push her limits and set an example of strength for her family, especially her grandchildren. She underscored the importance of staying active and strong to engage fully with her family and inspire others to start their own fitness journeys regardless of age.

The dedication and success of these women have not gone unnoticed by their families, with Klempner and Archambault’s children expressing pride in their mothers’ achievements. McEachern hopes that her story will serve as motivation for others to pursue their fitness goals without delay, emphasizing that it is never too late to start a new journey of physical strength and empowerment.
