A health alert has been issued for a resort in British Columbia’s Interior due to expired permits and water safety concerns, with ongoing challenges noted by officials. Interior Health has directed the closure of the restaurant, pool, and hot tubs at Spruce Hill Resort & Spa in 108 Mile Ranch. The resort has been operating without valid permits for food service, pool, and hot tubs since March 31, despite multiple shutdown orders.
Courtney Zimmerman, the corporate director of environmental health at Interior Health, mentioned that the facility has been consistently non-compliant for the past four years, with over 200 enforcement actions taken. Recent inspections revealed that guests were not being informed of an active boil-water notice, posing health risks such as potential E. coli contamination.
The health authority has advised against using the pool or hot tubs at the resort, citing concerns about recent equipment changes that have not been properly reviewed. Zimmerman expressed difficulties in enforcement, stating that the resort reopens shortly after being shut down.
Interior Health is collaborating with legal authorities to pursue further enforcement actions. Public complaints about the resort have been ongoing for years, with 14 filed in 2025 alone. The resort has a history of mistreating employees and faced a discrimination case in 2018.
The resort has responded to the health authority’s concerns, stating that its spa and restaurant services are temporarily closed while staff are on vacation. Interior Health is recommending individuals who recently visited the resort and are feeling unwell to seek medical advice promptly.
