The NBA is currently conducting a review in response to the recent arrests of Miami guard Terry Rozier and Portland coach Chauncey Billups for their alleged involvement in gambling activities. The league is focusing on safeguarding not only the game’s integrity but also the well-being of its players and coaches. A memo from the NBA’s legal department, obtained by The Associated Press, highlighted the importance of reassessing how sports betting should be regulated, especially with the widespread legalization of betting in many U.S. states.
Lawmakers in Washington, including Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Maria Cantwell, have shown interest in the matter. They have requested information from the NBA regarding the investigation into Rozier and events surrounding a game he played with the Charlotte Hornets on March 23, 2023. The senators emphasize the significance of maintaining the public’s trust in the integrity of NBA games and ensuring they are free from external influences like organized crime or gambling-related activities.
Following the unsealing of indictments last week and the subsequent arrests, including those of Billups and Rozier, federal officials alleged that Rozier conspired to manipulate his statistical performance in a game to benefit associates’ bets. Similar charges were faced by former player Jontay Porter before being banned from the league in 2024 by Commissioner Adam Silver.
Despite a probe into the unusual betting patterns on the game involving Rozier, the NBA did not find sufficient evidence to conclude rule violations on his part. However, the league acknowledged the need for enhanced regulations to protect the integrity of the NBA, particularly regarding proposition bets on individual player performances.
The NBA’s recent actions coincide with other sports leagues taking steps to address gambling-related issues. MLB and the NFL have also been active in enforcing their gambling policies. Notably, the NBA is considering revising its injury reporting system to prevent insider trading practices that could impact betting outcomes. The league aims to ensure all stakeholders are aware of the risks associated with gambling and is open to input from teams on future strategies.
