“Toronto Urges Flu Shots as Child Cases Surge”

Toronto’s chief medical officer is advising the public to get flu shots as there has been an early increase in flu cases among children this season and the unfortunate passing of three children in eastern Ontario. Dr. Michelle Murti mentioned that Toronto is witnessing a rapid surge in flu cases, especially in children, as the flu season arrived early this year, primarily driven by influenza A, which has been affecting children more severely.

The early rise in flu cases, particularly among children, is leading to more children needing hospitalization, highlighting the seriousness of the current flu season. In eastern Ontario, three children aged between five and nine have lost their lives this month due to flu complications, as announced by Ottawa Public Health and the Eastern Ontario Health Unit.

Toronto has not reported any flu-related child fatalities this season. Dr. Murti expressed her sympathies on behalf of Toronto Public Health to the families of the deceased children and emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures, including flu vaccination, regular hand hygiene, staying home when unwell, and wearing masks in crowded indoor settings.

She stressed the significance of these precautions, especially to safeguard children and vulnerable individuals in the community, especially during holiday gatherings. Flu shots are freely available in Ontario for individuals aged six months and above at participating pharmacies and primary care facilities. Dr. Murti also recommended getting the COVID-19 vaccine simultaneously with the flu shot for added protection.
