Police in Longueuil, Quebec, have apprehended a woman following the death of a newborn discovered in a bus shelter. The baby was found at a bus shelter near Briggs Street on Chambly Road. Authorities have detained a 33-year-old female, and her mental and physical well-being is currently under assessment. While it has not been confirmed if she is the infant’s mother, the possibility of charging her with infanticide is being considered.
Upon discovery, the baby was still connected to the placenta, exposed, and suffering from severe cold, as reported by the Coopérative des techniciens ambulanciers de la Montérégie, the paramedic service for the region. The infant was unresponsive but received resuscitation efforts until reaching the hospital.
A call was placed to emergency services at 6:30 a.m. Monday reporting the presence of a baby in the bus shelter. Immediate medical assistance was provided before the baby was transported to the hospital. Police urged the public to avoid the area, with road closures in place on Briggs Street and Chambly Road.
Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier expressed deep concern over the abandonment and death of the newborn, noting similarities to a recent case involving an infant left on a doorstep in the same city. Authorities are actively investigating both incidents, although they have clarified that the two events are unrelated.
As the investigation progresses, the city will closely monitor developments, ensuring the individual in custody receives appropriate physical and mental support during this delicate time.
