Rugby Canada has announced the success of its fundraising campaign, “Mission: Win Rugby World Cup 2025,” surpassing its target by raising over $1 million. This amount, combined with the $2.6 million provided by the governing body, filled the financial gap in Canada head coach Kevin Rouet’s preparation strategy. Despite the Canadian women’s team finishing as runners-up in the final against England on Sept. 27, the additional funds proved crucial in enhancing their performance.
The fundraising initiative, aimed at generating $1 million, achieved a total of $1.06 million through contributions from more than 1,500 donors, including community rugby clubs, the Canadian Rugby Foundation’s Monty Heald Fund, and generous individual donations. Coach Rouet expressed gratitude, stating, “This support had a tangible impact both on and off the field, providing us with the necessary resources to compete at the highest level.”
The raised funds facilitated two extra pre-tournament training camps, one in Chula Vista, Calif., preceding the Pacific Four Series in May, and another in Perth, Ont., before test matches in South Africa in July. Additionally, the financial support covered travel expenses, accommodation outside of the World Cup, nutritional resources, and additional medical and strength and conditioning staff during the tournament.
Rugby Canada’s CEO, Nathan Bombrys, emphasized the significance of the campaign, stating, “This initiative has been a testament to the belief in our team and their journey, uniting the nation to surpass our fundraising goal.” Despite these achievements, Rouet acknowledged ongoing budget challenges for the Canadian team, highlighting the necessity of maximizing available resources each year.
Looking ahead, Rouet anticipates potential budget constraints in the following years, particularly with the upcoming Men’s World Cup in 2027 and the Olympics in 2028. Despite uncertainties, he remains optimistic, acknowledging the continuous improvement within the federation. The coach emphasized the cyclical nature of sports funding and expressed gratitude for the support received, underscoring the evolving landscape of Canadian rugby.
Overall, the successful fundraising campaign not only provided vital financial support for the Canadian team’s World Cup journey but also highlighted the unwavering dedication and commitment of the rugby community towards achieving excellence in the sport.
