“Justice Dept. to probe Epstein links to Clinton, JPMorgan”

The U.S. Justice Department announced on Friday its commitment to investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged connections with former President Bill Clinton and JPMorgan, in response to President Donald Trump’s directive. This move follows the release of documents by a congressional committee that raised concerns about Trump’s ties to Epstein, marking another instance of Trump urging federal law enforcement to pursue his perceived adversaries.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi disclosed that Jay Clayton, the chief federal prosecutor in Manhattan, will spearhead the investigation. The Epstein scandal has been a persistent issue for Trump, who has faced accusations of promoting conspiracy theories about Epstein. Trump requested the Justice Department to also look into former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Reid Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn and a prominent Democratic donor, both mentioned in the released Epstein-related documents.

Trump emphasized on social media that Epstein’s association with the Democratic Party should be their concern, distancing himself and the Republicans from the matter. JPMorgan expressed regret for its past ties with Epstein as a client from 1998 to 2013 but denied any involvement in his illicit activities. Clinton’s deputy chief of staff and Hoffman both defended their respective connections to Epstein, denying any wrongdoing.

Despite a previous memo from July stating no basis for investigating uncharged individuals in the Epstein case, the Justice Department yielded to Trump’s request. Trump has denied knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activities involving minors and sex trafficking. There is ongoing pressure for the release of all Epstein-related materials by the Justice Department, with a pending vote in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives on compelling the release of such information.

JPMorgan settled with some of Epstein’s victims for $290 million in 2023 over allegations of negligence regarding his sex trafficking activities. While well-known figures like Clinton, Summers, and Hoffman have denied involvement in Epstein’s crimes, their previous connections have been scrutinized. Epstein had associations with various prominent individuals, including Prince Andrew of the U.K., who faced repercussions due to his relationship with Epstein.

Trump’s use of the Justice Department to target political opponents has raised concerns, with experts criticizing the president’s interference in such investigations. Clayton, an independent figure, who previously led the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission during Trump’s first term, has been tasked with overseeing the Epstein investigation.
