The film “One Battle After Another” emerged as the standout winner at this year’s prestigious Academy Awards, clinching the coveted best picture Oscar along with five additional accolades. Initially, Ryan Coogler’s movie “Sinners” led the nomination race with a groundbreaking 16 nods, ultimately securing victories in four categories.
Michael B. Jordan, the lead in “Sinners,” seized the best actor award, marking his debut win on his first nomination and receiving a thunderous standing ovation from the audience. Meanwhile, Jessie Buckley triumphed for her portrayal of William Shakespeare’s wife in “Hamnet,” following a dominant award season that saw her clinch a Golden Globe, Critics Choice, Actor, and BAFTA Film awards.
In another highlight, Amy Madigan was recognized as the best supporting actress for her role in the film “Weapons,” while Sean Penn clinched the supporting actor Oscar for his performance in “One Battle After Another” — his third Academy Award.
Notably, several Canadians enjoyed a triumphant evening at the Oscars. Toronto director Maggie Kang accepted the Oscar for best animated feature for “KPop Demon Hunters,” while Canadian production designers Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau, along with Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey, took home Oscars for their work on “Frankenstein.” Additionally, Montreal filmmakers Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski claimed the award for best animated short film for “The Girl Who Cried Pearls.”
Apart from securing wins for best picture and best supporting actor, “One Battle After Another” propelled Paul Thomas Anderson to his first-ever victories in the best adapted screenplay and directing categories. The film also clinched awards for editing and casting, the latter being a new Academy Award category introduced after 24 years.
On the other hand, “Sinners” bagged four awards, including Ryan Coogler’s win for best original screenplay and Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s victory for best cinematography, marking a significant milestone as the first time a racialized woman has won the cinematography award.
“Frankenstein,” filmed in Toronto, also notched three wins at the prestigious event. The 98th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, showcased a diverse array of winners across various categories, celebrating outstanding achievements in the film industry.
