Everlane Acquired by Shein: Sustainability Concerns Rise

Everlane, the eco-friendly fashion brand known for its commitment to transparency, has been acquired by Shein, an online retailer specializing in fast fashion. The sale agreement was announced in a statement by Everlane’s CEO, Alfred Chang, emphasizing that Everlane will maintain its sustainability focus and high-quality standards under the new ownership.

The deal, approved by Everlane’s board and finalized by private equity firm L Catterton, did not disclose the financial terms, but reports suggest a valuation of $100 million US. Despite Everlane’s previous financial challenges, including accumulating $90 million US in debt, the brand’s ethos of ethical production and transparency has resonated with consumers.

The acquisition has sparked criticism from loyal Everlane supporters who view Shein’s fast fashion model as contradictory to Everlane’s sustainability principles. Industry experts express concern over the impact of such acquisitions on the fashion landscape, highlighting the challenges faced by sustainable brands in a market dominated by low-cost, high-speed production.

While sustainable brands like Everlane face competition from fast fashion giants like Shein, there is ongoing debate on the viability of sustainability in the fashion industry. Experts suggest that structural changes, including regulations holding companies accountable for their environmental impact, are necessary to drive long-term sustainability in the fashion sector.
