“Bank of Canada Warns of Growing Financial Risks”

The Bank of Canada announced that the Canadian financial system is currently stable but faces increasing vulnerabilities within a volatile economic and geopolitical landscape. Senior Deputy Governor Carolyn Rogers stated that while the financial system is resilient, certain areas have shown heightened vulnerabilities.

The annual Financial Stability Report, typically presented by Governor Tiff Macklem, highlighted the current state of the financial market, emphasizing potential risks that could impact economic resilience. Concerns include elevated stock market valuations, rising corporate debt, and increased borrowing by hedge funds to purchase sovereign debt, which, although manageable individually, could pose challenges in a volatile environment.

Rogers warned that a combination of shocks could trigger multiple vulnerabilities simultaneously, leading to a loss of investor confidence and heightened demand for liquidity. Factors such as the upcoming review of the North American free trade agreement and potential oil shocks from geopolitical tensions pose additional risks to the economy.

In the previous year’s report, Macklem had expressed concerns about a prolonged trade war with the U.S. impacting household and business debt repayment ability. Rogers noted that the effects of such risks have been contained so far. Furthermore, Deputy Governor Toni Gravelle mentioned that while Canadian households carry high debt levels, the proportion of borrowers struggling with debt payments has stabilized.

The central bank anticipates that the risks associated with mortgage renewals at higher rates, identified in the previous year, will subside by the latter half of 2027. Despite positive household economic indicators, Rogers acknowledged that Canadians may still experience financial stress due to ongoing uncertainties.

Major Canadian banks, integral to the domestic banking system, have recorded increased profitability and capital buffers, indicating strong financial positions.
