In Manitoba, disposable masks and training are provided to aid firefighters in coping with air pollution. However, protecting against wildfire smoke is not straightforward due to various challenges. The physical obstacles faced by firefighters, such as wearing heavy gear during strenuous activities, can make it difficult to prioritize respiratory protection.
While certain masks like respirators can filter out hazardous particles in wildfire smoke, there are practical considerations. The Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union, representing wildland firefighters, highlighted the challenges of using such masks during demanding firefighting operations. Bulky face coverings can impede movement and add to the physical strain of the job.
Amid concerns about the health impacts of smoke exposure, Manitoba offers disposable N95 masks to firefighters. Despite their effectiveness in filtering airborne particles, N95 masks have limitations, including potential gas infiltration and breathing discomfort during exertion.
Innovations are needed to enhance respiratory protection for firefighters, according to Pascoe. He mentioned that respirators with cartridges could be a better alternative, although they present communication challenges and require frequent cartridge replacements based on smoke levels.
Manitoba’s Natural Resources Minister, Ian Bushie, acknowledged the importance of safeguarding staff from wildfire smoke dangers while acknowledging the practical issues associated with mask usage. Firefighters have raised concerns about heat stress and breathing difficulties, underscoring the complexities of balancing protection and operational challenges.
In British Columbia, strategies like rotating crews in smoky areas, ensuring thorough cleanup post-fire containment, and providing clean air spaces for rest are employed to reduce smoke exposure. Natasha Broznitsky from the BC Wildfire Service emphasized that respiratory protection is a crucial component of a comprehensive approach to safeguarding firefighters.
