The Canadian team, currently ranked 28th globally, is set to face Ecuador on November 13 at BMO Field and Venezuela on November 18 at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Marcelo Flores, a 22-year-old winger born in Georgetown, Ontario, to a Canadian mother and Mexican father, has previously played for Mexico at the senior level. However, he is eligible for a one-time switch to represent Canada under FIFA’s regulations introduced in 2021. Alfie Jones, a 28-year-old English-born center back with Canadian ancestry, is in the final stages of acquiring Canadian citizenship. Owen Goodman, a 21-year-old goalkeeper born in England and raised in Canada, already holds Canadian citizenship.
Despite facing challenges in the past, including an unsuccessful attempt to recruit Flores by former coach John Herdman, the player’s interest in representing Canada has evolved. Marsch, who has met with Flores in Mexico, expressed optimism about Flores’ growing interest in joining the Canadian national team.
