A recent study conducted by a team of researchers from Manitoba and Saskatchewan has revealed that a widely used fertilizer is contributing to the degradation of nearly half of the freshwater bodies in the Canadian Prairies. The fertilizer, urea, is commonly used in agriculture globally to enhance crop growth. Despite its widespread use, there has been limited research on its impact on aquatic ecosystems.
The research experiment involved adding urea to farm ponds in Saskatchewan to simulate the effects of agricultural fertilization in the region. The results showed a significant increase in the growth of microscopic algae, leading to oxygen depletion in the ponds. This excessive algae growth was found to have detrimental effects on water quality, causing ecological imbalances.
According to Cale Gushulak, an assistant professor at the University of Manitoba, the findings suggest that the use of urea is causing rapid oxygen loss in surface waters, resulting in fish mortality, increased toxin exposure, and harmful algae blooms. The study indicates that nearly half of the lakes, wetlands, and reservoirs in the Prairie region could be impacted by years of urea application.
Gushulak emphasized the global scale of the issue, noting that agricultural regions in China and the United States face similar vulnerability to urea-related damage. However, he highlighted the importance of improving fertilizer technology and soil management practices to prevent urea from entering freshwater bodies.
Asim Biswas, a professor at the University of Guelph, acknowledged the significance of the study but cautioned against overstating the impact of urea. He highlighted the interaction of urea with phosphorus in ecosystems and the need to consider existing nutrient levels in water bodies.
The study’s results challenge the perception of Canada as a nation abundant in freshwater resources, revealing ongoing challenges in maintaining water quality. Gushulak warned that continued penetration of urea into freshwater systems could lead to deteriorating water resources and increased costs of water usage, particularly as climate patterns shift in the Prairies.
