Canada Post has officially finalized new collective agreements with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). The agreement, which received overwhelming support from CUPW’s 55,000 postal worker members on June 1, marks the end of prolonged negotiations and strikes. This development comes amidst uncertainties surrounding the future of the Crown corporation.
A Canada Post spokesperson expressed optimism about the signed agreements, emphasizing the importance of stability for the business. The deal features wage hikes of 6.5% in the first year, followed by 3% in the second year, along with adjustments tied to the annual inflation rate for the subsequent three years. Additionally, the agreement introduces a weekend parcel delivery framework and enhanced benefits.
The ratification process saw significant approval rates, with 86% of rural and suburban mail carriers and 89% of urban employees voting in favor. The agreement is set to remain valid until January 31, 2029.
Canada Post views this agreement as crucial as the organization undergoes a multi-year transformation to enhance financial sustainability and cater better to the evolving needs of the nation. The corporation’s recent financial report for the first quarter indicated a $205 million loss, reflecting ongoing challenges in competing with private courier services.
To manage costs effectively, Canada Post has implemented strategies such as phasing out door-to-door delivery, a move that has faced opposition from the union.
