Referring to Edwards as the “Queen of Cleveland,” Heise emphasized the admiration they had for her. Edwards, a 21-year-old forward-turned-defenseman from Cleveland Heights, received a warm welcome during her homecoming. She was invited by captain Hilary Knight to participate in the ceremonial opening faceoff against Canada’s captain, Marie-Philip Poulin. Additionally, Edwards played a key role in the American team’s first goal by providing the primary assist.
Despite sustaining a knee injury in a college game three weeks ago, Edwards persevered and played a pivotal role in the game. Her electrifying presence was felt when her shot was deflected by Heise to equalize the score midway through the first period. Edwards, who is the first Black female player to skate for Team USA, expressed her excitement and gratitude for the opportunity.
Abbey Murphy’s hat trick, with assists from Heise, contributed significantly to the American victory. Goalie Aerin Frankel made 26 saves to secure the win, marking the team’s third consecutive victory against their Canadian rivals. The Americans have maintained their winning streak since defeating Canada in the world championships held in the Czech Republic earlier this year.
Canada’s lone goal was scored by Sarah Fillier, with Eve Gascon making her national team debut as the goaltender. The upcoming matches between the two teams will take place in Buffalo, New York, and Edmonton, Alberta, in the following month. While the Americans are the reigning world champions, Canada holds the title of defending Olympic champions, having secured their fifth gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Games.
