“Severe Storm Hits Newfoundland: Power Outages & Evacuations”

A severe storm continues to wreak havoc in Newfoundland and Labrador, causing power outages for more than 9,000 residents and leading to evacuations in the Trepassey community due to a fish plant fire.

Mayor Wanda Waddleton mentioned that two families in the lower coast region were evacuated as a precautionary measure, with the possibility of more evacuations pending. The coastal area is at risk of being cut off due to rising water levels, posing a threat to the 29 residents residing in the vicinity, many of whom are elderly.

The town’s breakwater, damaged during a previous storm in 2024, remains unrepaired. In Trepassey, winds reached speeds of 143 km/h, causing significant damage.

The St. Mary’s fish plant in Cape St. Mary’s was engulfed in flames as hurricane-force winds swept through the area. Despite efforts by fire crews, the plant was destroyed before they could contain the blaze.

Mayor Steve Ryan described the unprecedented wind conditions, with his own property sustaining damage. Additionally, water intrusion occurred in the town’s abandoned fish sauce plant, which contains potentially hazardous materials.

A widespread power outage affected over 9,000 customers of Newfoundland Power. Authorities advised caution on the roads due to the risk of hydroplaning. The storm is expected to persist, bringing heavy rain and strong winds, with potential coastal flooding in various regions.

Environment Canada issued multiple weather alerts for Newfoundland, warning of heavy wind, rain, and potential coastal flooding. Snowfall warnings were issued for parts of the province, with heightened concerns for southern and eastern Labrador.

Local officials expressed concerns about the impact of the storm on infrastructure, with roadways and shoreline defenses being tested. The situation remains precarious as the region braces for further challenges.

Residents are urged to stay informed about the evolving weather conditions and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
