MP Jaime Battiste Fined $600 for Election Violations

MP Jaime Battiste has been fined four times for breaking election regulations related to his campaign for the Liberal nomination in his Nova Scotia constituency in 2019. Federal Elections Commissioner Caroline Simard disclosed that Battiste was penalized a total of $600 for various infractions. These included exceeding the maximum personal donation limit to his campaign, depositing campaign contributions into his personal bank account, covering several campaign expenses personally, and submitting a deceitful declaration to Elections Canada.

Individuals are restricted to donating $1,600 annually to a political candidate or party, with candidates allowed an additional $1,000 personal contribution. During the nomination phase, Battiste was found to have contributed over $4,000 to his campaign. Additionally, he received over $8,000 in donations to his personal bank account before transferring the funds to his campaign account, a violation as only a candidate’s financial agent can accept campaign donations under Canadian election regulations.

Moreover, only the financial agent is permitted to make payments for campaign expenses. However, it was discovered that Battiste used his personal credit card to cover various expenses exceeding $700. Battiste acknowledged the errors made during the 2019 nomination process, stating that both he and his financial agent had made mistakes but took corrective actions promptly.

Despite the fines, Battiste highlighted his growth since the nomination process, having successfully participated in three subsequent elections and receiving approval as a candidate for the 2025 leadership race. Commissioner Simard reduced the fines considering mitigating circumstances, such as Battiste’s cooperation during the investigation. Battiste confirmed that he has settled the fines in full.
