British singer Dua Lipa has taken legal action against Samsung Electronics, seeking a minimum of $15 million in compensation. The lawsuit claims that Samsung unlawfully used her image to promote their televisions without her permission. Allegedly, Samsung featured a copyrighted photo of Dua Lipa on the packaging of TV sets for sale, implying her endorsement of the product. The photo in question, titled “Dua Lipa – Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024,” is owned solely by Dua Lipa.
Samsung Electronics declined to comment on the ongoing lawsuit, while Dua Lipa’s representatives have not yet provided any comments. In addition to copyright and trademark violations, Dua Lipa accuses Samsung of violating her publicity rights.
Lawyers for Dua Lipa submitted evidence in the form of screenshots of social media posts and comments, suggesting that her image on the TV packaging influenced potential customers to make purchases. Despite Dua Lipa’s previous demands to cease the use of her image, Samsung allegedly continued to feature it, causing harm to her brand identity and goodwill by falsely suggesting her endorsement of their products.
