AFC Toronto secures top spot with 1-0 win over Halifax

Esther Okoronkwo found the net in the 35th minute to secure a 1-0 victory for AFC Toronto against Halifax Tides FC on Saturday. With this win, Toronto (12-6-2) widened its lead to nine points over Vancouver, securing the top spot in the Northern Super League standings, which comprises six teams. The upcoming match will see Vancouver hosting Calgary on Saturday evening.

In the Northern Super League standings, Toronto holds the second-best goal differential of 29-21, with Ottawa in third place with a differential of 33-20. On the other hand, Halifax (3-12-3) saw their winless streak stretch to eight games (0-7-2). Their last victory dates back to July 7 when they defeated Calgary 1-0.

The next matches for both teams are scheduled for September 13, with Toronto facing Vancouver at home while Halifax will host Ottawa.

In another game, Vancouver Rise dominated Calgary Wild with a 6-0 victory at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C. Latifah Abdu scored in the 15th and 53rd minutes, with Jessica De Filippo adding another goal in stoppage time of the first half. Quinn, Mariah Lee, and Lisa Pechersky also contributed goals for Vancouver.

The Rise (9-5-5) now sit six points behind AFC Toronto in the standings but have moved four points ahead of Ottawa Rapid and Montreal Roses. Calgary (6-11-2) currently holds the fifth position.

During the match, Vancouver controlled 62% of possession and outshot Calgary 24-11 (8-5 on target). Goalkeeper Morgan McAslan kept a clean sheet for Vancouver, who also secured eight corners and received one of the three yellow cards shown in the game.

In a video highlight, Abdu’s impressive performance against Calgary was showcased, as she scored two goals in her debut match for Vancouver Rise, leading her team to a convincing victory.
