A virtual star named Tilly Norwood, created by an AI production company in Europe, has stirred controversy among Hollywood actors and the American actors’ union. The CEO of Particle6, Eline Van der Velden, mentioned that several entertainment companies showed interest in signing deals with Tilly Norwood, which sparked outrage among real actors.
Melissa Barrera, known for her role in “Scream,” expressed her disapproval on Instagram, prompting other actors like Toni Collette, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, and Kiersey Clemons to join in. Whoopi Goldberg also criticized the AI creation, highlighting concerns about the impact of AI-generated performers on the acting industry.
SAG-AFTRA, the U.S. actors’ union, emphasized that Tilly Norwood is not a genuine actor but a computer-generated character trained on professional performers’ work without consent or compensation. The union insisted on regulations requiring prior notice and negotiation before using AI performers, citing a past strike where protections limiting studios’ use of AI reproductions of actors were secured.
In response to the backlash, Eline Van der Velden clarified that Tilly Norwood was not intended to replace human actors but to offer a new storytelling tool. The first AI creation from Xicoia, Norwood has so far appeared in a comedic video produced by Particle6, showcasing her versatility in various roles.
Despite the opposition from some actors and unions, the entertainment industry is gradually embracing AI technology. AI has been utilized to de-age stars, dub shows in different languages, and enhance visual effects in movies. Industry experts, including James Cameron, are exploring the potential of AI tools in filmmaking, with AI-generated content making its way into award-winning films like “Emilia Perez” and “The Brutalist.”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has even allowed AI technology in films considered for prestigious awards like the Oscars. While AI integration in the entertainment industry continues to evolve, debates persist regarding the ethical implications and creative boundaries of using AI in storytelling.
