Belarusian Opposition Leader Mikola Statkevich Defies Pardon, Refuses to Leave Country

Belarusian opposition leader Mikola Statkevich declined to leave Belarus and refused to cross into Lithuania along with other recently released prisoners following a pardon at the request of U.S. President Donald Trump, as confirmed by a senior official from the exiled opposition party. Franak Viacorka, the official, described the situation as a distressing scenario where Statkevich resisted leaving Belarus, even as efforts were made to compel his departure.

Webcam footage captured Statkevich sitting in the border’s no-man’s zone, attempting to return to Belarus but being halted at the border, according to Viacorka in a voice message. This incident highlights the oppressive nature of the regime, leaving individuals with no freedom to choose between staying or leaving.

In a separate development, Belarus released 52 political prisoners on the same day that the United States announced the partial lifting of sanctions on the country’s national airline. Belarus, a strong ally of Russia, has faced repeated sanctions from Western nations due to its human rights violations and its role in aiding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Under the leadership of President Alexander Lukashenko, who has maintained a firm grip on power for over three decades, Belarus has imprisoned numerous dissidents, opposition figures, and journalists. Lukashenko has recently made efforts to improve relations with Western countries in hopes of easing sanctions and ending the nation’s international isolation. Releasing prisoners has become a strategy employed by Lukashenko to garner favor with Western nations.

Earlier in June, Belarus released Siarhei Tsikhanouski, a prominent dissident and the spouse of exiled opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, along with 13 others following discussions involving a high-ranking representative of President Trump.

The release of prisoners coincided with a video posted by Belarusian state media announcing the lifting of sanctions on Belavia, the national carrier, by the U.S. envoy John Coale. Belavia was sanctioned by the EU, the U.S., and other countries after Belarus forced a commercial flight from Greece to Lithuania to land in Minsk, leading to the arrest of Raman Pratasevich, a dissenting journalist on board.

The White House has not yet provided a response to inquiries regarding this matter.
