Former CBC host Cathy Alex has passed away at the age of 62 after battling multiple myeloma for several years. Originally from Regina, Alex spent her formative years in Guelph, Ontario, and pursued studies in human kinetics at the University of Guelph, followed by a journalism degree from Carleton University in Ottawa.
During her 33-year career with CBC Radio, Alex worked in various locations such as Corner Brook, Toronto, Windsor, and Iqaluit before settling in northwestern Ontario. She served for 25 years at CBC Thunder Bay in roles including editor, producer, reporter, and host, before retiring in 2021.
Alex was recognized for her diverse coverage of stories, with notable acclaim coming in 2018 when the Association of Ontario Midwives honored her for her reporting on midwifery issues. Colleagues remember her as a seasoned professional with a great on-air presence and a wealth of information at her disposal.
Described as open, real, and possessing a great sense of humor, Alex was cherished by many listeners. Her interests included camping, canoeing, baking, singing, nature walks, reading, and swimming. She was also actively involved in community initiatives, such as organizing readings of “A Christmas Carol” and volunteering for the Terry Fox Run.
Alex is survived by her husband, two daughters, mother, sisters, and other family members. Her family expressed gratitude for the time spent together during her remission and thanked the supportive community. A memorial service is scheduled for January 14 at Sargent and Sons Funeral Home in Thunder Bay. Donations in Alex’s memory can be made to Myeloma Canada or the Northern Cancer Fund.
