“Bob Rae Reflects on Challenging UN Term”

During Bob Rae’s term as Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations in 2020, the world was grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic. His tenure witnessed significant global events such as the Taliban’s control of Afghanistan, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Hamas attacks on Israel, and Israel’s subsequent actions in Gaza.

Despite facing criticism, particularly from former U.S. President Donald Trump, for its perceived failure in maintaining peace, Rae also expressed his reservations about the United Nations. However, he maintained his belief in the organization’s people and mission. On his final day in office, he shared his thoughts with As It Happens host Nil Koçsal.

Reflecting on his departure, Rae highlighted the mix of emotions as he bid farewell to colleagues in Ottawa, the UN officials, and the personal connections he had forged during his tenure. He acknowledged the challenges but also the rewarding moments within the organization.

Regarding the UN’s future, Rae emphasized the dedication and impact of thousands of individuals working tirelessly in conflict zones like Gaza and Sudan to improve global conditions. He stressed the importance of not just lamenting global crises but actively working towards positive change.

Recalling significant moments during his term, Rae mentioned the Afghan collapse, the Ukraine invasion, and the Hamas attacks on Israel as events that deeply impacted his work. Despite the emotional toll, he underscored the necessity of constantly seeking solutions and not becoming desensitized to the challenges.

When questioned about remaining seated during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at the UN, Rae defended the decision as a stance for Canada’s presence and the importance of listening to differing viewpoints. He highlighted the need for recognizing the dignity of both Palestine and Israel in seeking a peaceful resolution.

Reflecting on his experience, Rae acknowledged the personal growth and lessons learned during his tenure as ambassador. He recognized his ability to listen, collaborate effectively, and contribute to making a positive impact within the international diplomatic arena.
