“British Columbia Hospital Closes ER Overnight Due to Staffing Shortages”

A hospital in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley has decided to close its emergency department overnight for over a week due to staffing issues. Mission Memorial Hospital will only be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. between December 29 and January 6, as stated in a Fraser Health news release. The closures are attributed to nationwide pressures affecting the healthcare system.

During this period, the hospital will have specialized nurses available to evaluate walk-in patients and offer essential care. If patients require more urgent attention, they will be directed to a nearby hospital. Dr. Paul Theron, the medical director at Mission Memorial Hospital, stated that the temporary closure aims to establish consistent operating hours and ensure patient safety by aligning services with the available staff. Efforts are underway in collaboration with the provincial Ministry of Health to address long-term staffing stability.

This marks the seventh instance this year that the hospital has had to temporarily close its doors overnight. In response to previous closures, residents protested in November when the hospital announced its closure for the sixth time. Dr. Ralph Belle, Fraser Health’s vice-president of medicine, mentioned ongoing recruitment efforts and highlighted the ongoing renovation of Mission Memorial Hospital’s emergency department as a crucial factor in attracting and retaining physicians.

Meanwhile, Interior Health in British Columbia recently revealed plans to launch a pilot program in four B.C. Interior hospitals, including three with sporadic emergency department closures due to staffing challenges. This initiative will allow emergency-care patients to receive virtual consultations with off-site doctors, aiming to ensure continued access to essential healthcare services.
