Hulu has decided to cancel the planned reboot of the iconic ’90s supernatural series, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” as revealed by Sarah Michelle Gellar, the original show’s lead actress. Gellar shared the news via an Instagram post, expressing disappointment in Hulu’s decision not to move forward with the project.
The pilot for the proposed reboot, titled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,” had been filmed with Gellar and Ryan Kiera Armstrong, a 16-year-old actress set to portray the new vampire slayer in the series. The show, set in the fictional town of Sunnydale, California, depicted a group of young individuals battling vampires and other supernatural entities, challenging traditional television norms.
Renowned for its groundbreaking narrative structure and character development, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” has been credited with influencing a generation of television production. In a report commemorating the show’s 20th anniversary in 2017, cultural critics highlighted its impact on storytelling, addressing contemporary social issues and anxieties.
Gellar expressed gratitude to Chloe Zhao, the Oscar-winning director slated to revive the series, for the opportunity to revisit the character of Buffy. Despite the cancellation, Gellar emphasized her enduring love for the character and the fans, assuring them that she remains connected to Buffy’s legacy.
As of now, Hulu has not provided any official statement regarding the cancellation of the reboot.
