“Caffeine Pouch Trend Raises Health Concerns”

Cushion-like caffeine pouches in flavors such as chocolate and blueberry are gaining popularity on social media, particularly among young individuals, with videos on platforms like TikTok showcasing their usage. These pouches, similar in appearance to nicotine pouches, are designed to be placed between the lips and gums and contain varying caffeine dosages ranging from 50 to over 200 milligrams per pouch.

Dr. Nicholas Chadi, a pediatrician, highlights the rapid absorption of caffeine into the bloodstream when using these pouches due to the high concentration of blood vessels in the gums. Concerns arise as the trend of caffeine pouches parallels the rise of nicotine pouches, with some individuals even using both simultaneously.

While moderate caffeine consumption may lead to increased alertness and a faster heart rate, excessive intake, especially among teens and young adults, can pose health risks such as anxiety, heart palpitations, and potential overdose. Pediatricians recommend limiting daily caffeine intake to 100-200 milligrams to avoid adverse effects.

Experts caution that the lack of long-term research on caffeine pouches raises concerns about their potential health impacts. Dr. Michael Mak, a sleep specialist, warns of the risk of caffeine dependence among young users, which may exacerbate existing sleep issues and mask underlying health conditions.

Companies selling these products online emphasize that they are not intended for minors, although concerns persist regarding their appeal to young demographics. Health Canada has not authorized the sale of caffeine pouches in the country, citing the need for safety reviews. Efforts are underway to investigate compliance with existing regulations, with potential enforcement actions if violations are found.

Dr. Chadi calls for stricter regulations and clearer health warnings on caffeine pouches, emphasizing the importance of educating young individuals about the potential risks associated with excessive caffeine consumption.
