Caitlin Clark out for season with right groin injury

Caitlin Clark will be sidelined for the remainder of the Indiana Fever’s current season due to a right groin injury. In a statement, Clark expressed disappointment at not being able to return to play this season despite dedicated gym sessions aimed at making a comeback. She thanked the supporters who stood by her during this uncertain period and found solace in the unwavering fan support for both herself and the team.

The injury occurred during a game against the Connecticut Sun on July 15, resulting in a bone bruise for the former Iowa standout. Clark, in her second WNBA season, had been averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, and 5.0 rebounds in 13 games before the injury setback.

Amber Cox, Fever’s COO and GM, acknowledged Clark’s relentless efforts to recover and return to the court but highlighted the lack of sufficient time in the season for her safe return. Ensuring Clark’s long-term health and well-being is the top priority, with the team eagerly anticipating her full recovery for the upcoming 2026 season.

Despite striving to aid her team in reaching the playoffs for the second consecutive year, Clark’s return was impeded by the timing of her injury. The team is currently in eighth place in the standings, holding a 1 1/2-game lead over Los Angeles with three games left.

Clark faced a challenging season dealing with various injuries, including those to her left quad and left groin, which were a new experience for her. Notably, she had a flawless attendance record throughout her collegiate and initial WNBA seasons.

The Fever, already grappling with several season-ending injuries, have lost five players, including Clark. The impact of Clark’s absence is evident in her contributions to the growth of women’s basketball, both at the college level and in the WNBA, despite missing a significant portion of the season.
