Canada’s foreign affairs minister announced on Wednesday that Ottawa is reassessing its ties with Israel following the recent attack in Qatar, refraining from providing further details on the nature of this reassessment. Anita Anand, speaking at the Liberal caucus retreat, expressed concern over Israel’s actions in Qatar, emphasizing the need for peace efforts in the Middle East and the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
When questioned about the European Commission President’s intention to impose sanctions and suspend some trade activities with Israel over the Gaza conflict, Anand stated that Canada will continue to evaluate potential measures to be taken. Anand’s office clarified that the government is constantly monitoring the situation and remains committed to advocating for a ceasefire, ensuring humanitarian aid flows, and securing the release of hostages.
The recent Israeli attack on Hamas in Qatar, resulting in the deaths of five members, drew strong condemnation from various Western leaders. Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the assault as an act of aggression against Qatar’s sovereignty and an escalation of violence. Even President Donald Trump distanced himself from the attack, emphasizing that it was a unilateral decision by Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the strike as retaliation for previous attacks on Israeli personnel. He warned Qatar and other nations sheltering terrorists to either expel them or face consequences. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has led to Israel facing international pressure to cease hostilities and address the worsening humanitarian situation in the region.
The strike in Qatar represents a significant escalation in Israel’s conflict with Hamas, adding to the mounting casualties and tensions in the region. The European Union remains divided on its stance towards Israel and Palestine, with uncertainties surrounding the endorsement of proposed sanctions by von der Leyen. Several countries, including Canada, are planning to recognize a Palestinian state at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session.
