Canada’s Women’s Rugby Team Ready to Face New Zealand in World Cup Semifinals

Canada’s head coach, Kevin Rouet, has decided to maintain the same lineup for the upcoming clash against reigning champions New Zealand in the Women’s Rugby World Cup semifinals in England this Friday. The Canadian team, ranked second, will face off against the third-ranked Black Ferns at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol. Meanwhile, the top-ranked England will battle it out against fourth-ranked France in the second semifinal on Saturday.

Having triumphed over Australia 46-5 in the quarterfinals, Canada secured their spot after dominating Pool B with victories over Fiji (65-7), Wales (42-0), and Scotland (40-19). Rouet expressed confidence in the team’s preparation for the crucial match, stating that they are fully focused on achieving their long-term goal.

In a historic victory earlier in May 2024, Canada broke a 17-game losing streak against New Zealand with a 22-19 win in Christchurch. This triumph not only earned them the Pacific Four Series title but also propelled them to the second spot in the world rankings, displacing New Zealand. The Canadians have showcased their strength in recent clashes, instilling belief that they can emerge victorious once again.

Canada and New Zealand played to a 27-27 draw in their recent encounter during the Pacific Four Series. Despite the tie, New Zealand clinched the 2025 Pacific Four Series title on point difference over Canada. The team’s outstanding performance in the tournament is evident, leading in carries with 622 and ranking second in offloads with 66.

Ahead of the semifinal, Canada has received support from renowned personalities like Shania Twain and The Tragically Hip. Twain’s endorsement on social media and the band’s collaboration with the team have added a boost of morale and excitement. Additionally, veteran players like Karen Paquin and DaLeaka Menin are set to mark significant milestones in their careers during the crucial match.

The outcome of the semifinals will not only determine the finalists of the Women’s Rugby World Cup but also impact the world rankings. Canada could potentially ascend to the number one spot if they secure a convincing victory and England falters in their match against France. This scenario could lead to a reshuffle in the rankings, with implications for top teams like England and New Zealand, the reigning six-time world champions.
