Canadians Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov have secured spots in the quarterfinals at the Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel, Switzerland, following impressive straight-set victories. Auger-Aliassime, a two-time champion, delivered a stellar performance with 28 aces in a 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) win against Marin Cilic from Croatia. Maintaining a remarkable 96 percent first-serve points won and successfully avoiding any break points, the Montreal native extended his winning streak indoors to six matches, having recently clinched the Brussels title. As the fifth seed, Auger-Aliassime remains in contention for a berth at the ATP Finals in Turin.
Meanwhile, Shapovalov also showcased his skills with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Valentin Royer from France, backed by 11 aces. The player from Richmond Hill, Ontario, broke his opponent’s serve three times and dominated by winning 76 percent of his first-serve points. Shapovalov is set to face Joao Fonseca from Brazil in the next round, while Auger-Aliassime will battle against Jaume Munar from Spain, who caused an upset by defeating the second-seeded Ben Shelton of the United States with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
If both Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov secure victories in the quarterfinals, the tournament could witness an all-Canadian semifinal showdown between the two talented players.
