Courtney Sarault maintained her dominance in the women’s short track speedskating national championship by securing two more victories, extending her winning streak to nine gold medals. The Moncton native accumulated an impressive 30,000 points across her top six distances, comfortably surpassing her closest competitor, Kim Boutin, who scored 21,760 points.
Sarault clinched her eighth gold medal in the 1,500-meter event with a swift time of 2 minutes 39.528 seconds. Later, the 25-year-old sealed her triumph in the competition by claiming another gold in the 500 meters with a time of 42.988 seconds. Expressing her elation, Sarault remarked, “It feels unbelievable. Coming into this competition, I didn’t expect to have this great of results, but I got the job done and then some, so I’m super excited and proud of myself.”
On the men’s side, Montreal’s William Dandjinou emerged as the national champion, narrowly edging out teammate Felix Roussel by 1,000 points, with scores of 28,000 and 27,000, respectively. Despite a crash during the 1,500 final caused by a last-minute pass attempt, Dandjinou secured the title. The race was won by Mathieu Pelletier (2:16.603), accompanied on the podium by Maxime Laoun (2:16.687) and Philippe Daudelin (2:17.304).
Dandjinou also claimed silver in the 500 meters with a time of 41.666 seconds. Reflecting on his performance, Dandjinou stated, “I feel pretty good. These past two weekends have been quite difficult. I got the job done, but if I’m honest, I didn’t do it the way I wanted to. I was strategic but I feel I wasn’t necessarily the best skater during this competition. That tells me that I still have a lot of work to do.”
