“Canadian Zoologist Honored in New Heritage Minute”

A Canadian woman passionate about giraffes, who dedicated years to studying them in Africa, is being recognized in a new Heritage Minutes short film. Historica Canada unveiled the video showcasing the late Anne Innis Dagg from Waterloo, Ontario. Dagg, a renowned zoologist and author of several books, including a pivotal work on giraffes, passed away last year at 91.

The initiative to feature Dagg in a Heritage Minute was spurred by Historica Canada’s engagement with her family through the Anne Innis Dagg Foundation. Mary Dagg, CEO of the foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to shed light on her mother’s remarkable accomplishments.

The release of the new Heritage Minute coincides with Women’s History Month in Canada. Anthony Wilson-Smith, president and CEO of Historica Canada, emphasized Dagg’s resilience and contributions to her field, highlighting her as a source of national pride.

Despite facing obstacles in academia, particularly regarding gender equality, Dagg’s expertise and advocacy are showcased in the Heritage Minute. The documentary “The Woman Who Loves Giraffes,” released in 2018 and directed by Alison Reid, provides a deeper insight into Dagg’s life and work. Reid’s initial plan for a theatrical film shifted to a documentary format after discovering a wealth of historical material in Dagg’s possession.

Mary Dagg shared that the documentary production involved extensive efforts, including revisiting Africa for interviews with experts and individuals connected to Dagg’s academic journey. She hopes the Heritage Minute will inspire viewers to take action in preserving the environment and nurturing their passions, akin to her mother’s unwavering dedication to giraffe conservation.

The Heritage Minute encapsulates Dagg’s enduring legacy and serves as a tribute to her pioneering spirit. Through this initiative, Historica Canada aims to honor Dagg’s impactful contributions and inspire future generations to pursue their passions with determination.
