Kiaira Fedorus of Grande Prairie, Alberta, found herself in a moment of disbelief as she sat on the bathroom floor, staring at the positive pregnancy test. Despite always harboring the desire to become a mother, her spastic cerebral palsy made the prospect seem unattainable. While she had been taught never to give up easily, the news of her pregnancy shook her confidence in her ability to adapt.
The uncertainty of whether her body could support a pregnancy and handle the challenges of raising a child weighed heavily on her mind. Seeking solace, she confided in her mother, who had always been a pillar of strength and encouragement in her life.
Living with cerebral palsy, a condition resulting from brain trauma affecting motor skills and movement, presented unique challenges for Kiaira. Her spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy manifested as muscle stiffness on one side of her body, impacting her mobility and daily activities. Despite her lifelong familiarity with the condition, the prospect of motherhood posed entirely new challenges beyond her usual coping strategies.
With the unwavering support of her partner and mother, Kiaira embarked on the journey of pregnancy with cautious optimism. Overcoming initial anxieties, she found a supportive doctor who allayed her fears about potential risks due to her disability. As her due date approached, concerns about the physical demands of labor prompted her to opt for a caesarean birth to prioritize her baby’s safety.
Following the birth of her son, Kiaira embraced the role of motherhood, navigating the initial struggles of recovery and caring for her newborn. Drawing on her inner strength and determination, she adapted to the physical limitations posed by her condition. Though initially reliant on assistance, she eventually learned to manage tasks independently, including the intricate process of cradling her baby with one hand.
Nearly two years into motherhood, Kiaira has not only mastered the art of parenting with her unique challenges but has also extended her support to other mothers facing similar anxieties. Through initiatives like Mothers Inclusive on Instagram and a community support group in partnership with the Grande Prairie Public Library, she empowers and uplifts fellow mothers, showcasing the resilience and inclusivity of disabled parenting.
Reflecting on her journey, Kiaira acknowledges the hurdles she overcame and the lessons she learned along the way. With a newfound perspective on her capabilities as a mother, she encourages others to embrace their challenges and find strength in the journey of parenthood.
