“Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Sparks Cinema Frenzy”

The theatrical teaser and accompanying poster for the upcoming film “The Odyssey” directed by Christopher Nolan caused a frenzy among moviegoers, leading to select cinemas being sold out a year in advance of its release date on July 17, 2026. These cinemas, totaling 26 globally in countries such as the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, and the Czech Republic, are known for their expansive screens projecting on 70-mm Imax film, attracting enthusiasts seeking the analog charm of celluloid over digital screenings.

Among the sold-out venues is the Kramer Imax in Regina’s science center, boasting a 147-seat capacity and selling out all its available shows, including a Thursday 2 p.m. screening, within hours of ticket sales opening. The center’s chief operating officer, Ryan Holota, noted the increasing appreciation for the unique experience of watching movies on film, emphasizing the rarity and allure in the digital age.

The Kramer Imax transitioned to digital projection in 2023 due to the limited availability of film releases but preserved its 70-mm film projector, a move that has paid off with a growing audience seeking the distinctive qualities of film screenings. Mark Welton, the President of Imax Global Theatres, acknowledged the rising demand for film cameras among filmmakers, leading to an uptick in the company’s financial performance.

Recent films like “Sinners” have demonstrated that the shot-on-film status can enhance both critical reception and audience engagement, with a noticeable shift towards appreciating the unique qualities of film projection. The allure of film projection extends beyond the visual experience, with enthusiasts like Tyson Liske valuing the tangible connection to the filmmaker and the authenticity that film offers.

The revival of interest in film projection has been particularly pronounced post-pandemic, with audiences and filmmakers alike gravitating towards the nostalgic and tactile appeal of celluloid. Despite the challenges posed by automation and the decline of traditional projection roles, efforts to preserve and expand film projection capabilities are seen as crucial to meeting the demand for the immersive and authentic cinematic experience that film offers.
