Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre faced continued backlash on Wednesday following his comments regarding the RCMP and its leadership, as he attempted to clarify his statement suggesting that some individuals should face imprisonment for the previous Liberal government’s wrongdoings.
During an interview with the YouTube channel Northern Perspective, Poilievre criticized the national police force, labeling its leadership as “frankly just despicable” and accusing it of covering up for former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He asserted that many of the scandals during the Trudeau era warranted criminal charges, alleging that Trudeau had violated the Criminal Code by accepting a vacation from the Aga Khan, a figure with government connections.
Poilievre claimed that if the RCMP had fulfilled its duties, Trudeau would have faced criminal charges related to the vacation. However, the RCMP conducted investigations into the vacation and the SNC-Lavalin affair but did not lay any charges.
In response to the criticism of his comments, Poilievre addressed reporters, maintaining that he did not explicitly say Trudeau should have been imprisoned. He argued that certain scandals within the Liberal government deserved severe consequences.
Apart from the controversy surrounding his remarks about Trudeau, Poilievre also faced internal discord within the Conservative Party. Some MPs expressed reservations about his characterization of the RCMP and its leadership, with tensions reportedly arising during a caucus meeting.
While Poilievre tried to assuage concerns within the party by referencing past statements made on his behalf, dissent continued to simmer among some Conservative members. Despite the internal discord, some MPs publicly expressed support for Poilievre, downplaying the significance of his podcast comments.
In a bid to defend his stance, Poilievre cited past issues involving former RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki, calling for her resignation due to alleged scandals and political interference favoring the Liberal government. Lucki’s tenure was marked by controversies, including accusations of releasing sensitive information during the Nova Scotia mass shooting investigations.
Despite the critique, some Conservatives backed Poilievre’s precision in addressing Lucki’s actions and expressed confidence in his leadership. The party reiterated its support for frontline police officers while criticizing the Liberals’ handling of law enforcement matters.
As the debate raged on, Poilievre faced criticism from high-ranking Conservatives, including accusations of fixating on past controversies and using inflammatory rhetoric. Some critics viewed his approach as rooted in grievances rather than effective governance.
