“Crave’s Future with HBO Uncertain Amidst Paramount’s $110B Deal”

Canadians eagerly awaiting the debut of HBO’s highly-anticipated adaptation of the popular series “Harry Potter,” scheduled to launch early next year, will be able to enjoy it on Crave in Canada. The future of Crave’s exclusive rights to HBO content, including “Harry Potter” and shows like “The White Lotus,” “The Last of Us,” and “House of the Dragon,” remains uncertain amidst Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery for $110 billion US (roughly $150 billion Cdn).

The takeover, awaiting federal approval expected by year-end, raises questions about existing deals with Canadian broadcasters and streamers, particularly Crave. It is unclear if Canadian viewers will need to subscribe to another service to access their favorite shows. The potential consolidation of Paramount’s platforms, including Paramount+ and Pluto TV, with HBO Max into a unified streaming service aims to enhance competitiveness in the streaming landscape, according to Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison.

Despite the impending changes, Bell Media reassures viewers that Crave will continue to be the home of HBO and HBO Max programming in Canada under a long-term agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery. While the specific timeline of the current deal’s expiration is unknown, Bell Media affirms the presence of HBO content on Crave “for the foreseeable future.”

Should Paramount+ introduce HBO content in Canada, it may not necessarily vanish from Crave entirely, as seen with certain HBO library titles simultaneously available on multiple platforms in the US. The potential integration of Pluto TV, Paramount+, and HBO Max could impact the Canadian distribution landscape, including Corus Entertainment and Rogers Sports & Media, with implications for popular channels and streaming services offered to Canadian audiences.

Amidst these developments, the evolving streaming landscape and distribution agreements underscore the shifting dynamics and competition within the Canadian entertainment industry.
