Davis Cup Match Between Canada and Israel in Halifax to Be Held Without Spectators

Tennis Canada has announced that the upcoming Davis Cup match between Canada and Israel in Halifax will take place behind closed doors without spectators due to safety concerns. The decision was made in collaboration with the International Tennis Federation based on escalating safety worries and information received from local authorities and security agencies.

The move to close the event to fans follows a plea from over 400 Canadian athletes and academics, including Moh Ahmed, urging Tennis Canada to cancel the match due to Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank. The letter referenced experts and human rights organizations describing these actions as genocide against the Palestinian population.

Tennis Canada, in response, acknowledged the complex situation in the Middle East. While disappointing for the tennis community, CEO Gavin Ziv emphasized that the priority is ensuring a safe event. The organization is coordinating with private security and local police for the event.

The International Tennis Federation expressed disappointment over the closed venue but highlighted safety as the top priority. The tie is set for Friday and Saturday, with matches to be livestreamed. Ticket sales were halted, and refunds will be issued to fans who already purchased tickets.

A “March for Palestine” is planned to coincide with the tie, showing community pressure’s impact. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs criticized the closure, stating it silences Canadian tennis fans. The decision also led to the cancellation of $50,000 in funding from Halifax council due to reduced expected benefits.

Mayor Andy Fillmore encouraged fans to support Team Canada remotely. The Halifax Regional Police clarified they were not involved in the decision to close the venue. Events East assured that their public safety plan for the event remains in place and will be enforced.
